Simple Crosshair Redesign Instructions

This is intended to get you started on the simplest of HL crosshair redesign techniques. It will show you the steps necessary to get at your crosshair file, convert it to an alterable format and convert it back to the half-life sprite format when done. It will not teach you how to paint a crosshair. More detailed tutorials on designing your own sprites from scratch can be found at http://www.contaminated.net/waveleng...s/sprites.html

1. Install the three utilties. Sprite Viewer, Sprite Wizard, and Pak Explorer are all simple programs consisting of a single .exe file. Installation is just a matter of extracting the .exe file to a folder of your choice. See the Create a New Pak insrtructions in the Quake 2 section of Bullseye Crosshairs (http://www.bullseyecrosshairs.com) for more detailed instuctions on setting up Pak Explorer for maximum convenience.

2. Look inside the Sprites folder, which is inside the Valve folder in your Halflife folder for a file called crosshairs.spr. If you dont see a Sprites folder, use Pak Explorer( available for download at http://www.bullseyecrosshairs.com/pakexplr.zip ) to open the pak0.pak file inside the Valve folder in your your Halflife directory, and look for the crosshairs.spr file inside the Sprites folder in there. Extract a copy of it to the folder where you installed the two sprite utilities. For Counter Strike look for the files called ch_sniper. spr, ch_sniper2.spr, and sniper_scope.spr for the three sniper crosshairs. The regular weapon crosshair for CS has been hard coded since verison 6, and is not replaceable. For Opposing Force look for ofch1.spr and ofch2.spr.

3. Open the crosshairs.spr file with Sprite Viewer. Then choose File, Save BMP. Give the file any name you like and hit the Save button.

4. As a .bmp, your crosshair file can now be altered with any painting program like Windows Painbrush, Paint Shop Pro, Corel, any of the Adobe painting apps, and dozens of other programs. A few hints for the complete painting program novice: You'll want to draw in a zoomed mode -maybe 6 to 1 or so. Set your painting brush tool for the smallest possible tip(a single pixel) to start. Use the grid if there is one available, especially if you're working with curved lines or shaded areas. When fixing mistakes that need to be changed back to the background color, remember to use the eyedropper to choose the background color from the crosshair. Even if it's just black, you dont want to choose black from the color menu because *that* black is not transparent.

5. After redesigning the crosshair, open the file in Sprite Wizard. Go through the wizard steps and save the file back into the .spr format. Choose the Alphatest transparency mode at the last step in Sprite Wizard's conversion process. Rename the file to crosshairs.spr

6. There's no need to put the new crosshairs.spr file back into the pak0.pak. (In fact, if you are using Pak Explorer, you'll find that you can't, as Pak Explorer doesn't work well with long file names. It lets you view and extract them, but not put them back in the pak.) Put your new crosshair in the Sprites folder. Depending on the drive letter and folder you chose for installing Half-Life, the final path will be something like c:\sierra\halflife\valve\sprites\crosshairs.spr.
